    CHARACTERISTICS

  • Tulips are living things because they are born, they reproduce and they die.
  • Tulips comes from Asia. In Turkey, they are called "dulband" that it means turban because their flowers have this shape.
  • In spite of Tulips come from Asia they are a much appreciated flower in Holland.
  • Tulips are herbaceus plants because they have a thin and flexible stem. They are clasiffied as flowering plants
  • Tulips have roots, a stem and petals
  • They reproduce through pollination
  • Tulips can make their own food through photosynthesis.
  • These flowers bloom in Spring and their meassure is around 20-60 centrimetres.

PARTS OF THE TULIPS

The most important parts of a flower, like tulips, are the:
Corolla (petals). Tulips have six petals
Calyx (green leaves called sepals)
Stamens (male organ). Tulips have six stamens.
Pistil (female organ)

Corolla: is the set of petals (leaves around the centre of the flower). Tulips have six petals and they can have different colours, even black petals.
The calyx: is the set of green leaves outside the corolla. These leaves are called sepals.
The Pistil: is the female organ where seeds are made. It is made up of:
1- stigma
2- style
3- ovary (inside the ovary are ovules)
Stamens are the male reproductive organ. Tulips have six stamens. It is made up of:
1- an anther which contains pollen
2-a filament which holds up the anther

VITAL FUNCTIONS
NUTRITION
Tulips get nutrients through photosynthesis and get energy through respiration.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS.- Tulips make their own food through this process during the day. They absorb sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and minerals. They release oxygen into the air.
RESPIRATION.- Tulip sabsorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide into the air. They get energy through this process 24 hours a day.

INTERACTION
The tulips are a flowering plant and they move towards sunlight. This plant only bloom in Spring.

REPRODUCTION
The tulips are a flowering plant so they reproduce through their seeds (pollination process). Wind or
insects can accidentally transport pollen from one flower to another flower. Pollination occurs when
pollen reaches the pistil and travels down it where it fertilises the ovule and it becames in a seed.
When seeds fall to the ground, it germinate and a new plant grows.

Tulips have  male and  female organs:
MALE ORGANS
The stamen is the male reproductive organ. The stamen has a anther which contain the pollen and a filament that support the anther.

FEMALE ORGANS
The pistil is the female reproductive organ. The ovary is the central part of the pistil that contains  the ovules. Once a ovule is fertilised it becomes a seed.
