HEAT ENERGY

馃槂馃槂馃槂馃槂馃槂馃槂

THE EXPERIMENT

MATERIALS:

2 Balloons
1 Candle and matches
Some water
An adult

INSTRUCTIONS:

Fill the balloon with air and tie it. Don´t fill the balloon too big.
Light the candle
Place the balloon over the flame carefully. Count slowly till popped.
Do the same experiment with a water filled balloon.
Fill the balloon with water and tie it.
Count again slowly.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

In the first experiment, the balloon absorbed the flame's heat because the air inside the balloon transfers thermal energy very poorly. The air is a bad heat conductor. Because of this, the balloon starts to melt and pops.
Compared to air, water is good at absorbing heat energy. The water inside the balloon absorbed the flame's thermal energy very well and remove the heat form the plastic balloon.

REMEMBER:

  • Thermal energy is energy in the form of heat
  • When heat transfers from one object to another, this is called conduction. Some materials conduct heat better than others.
  • The water is a better conductor that air.
I HOPE YOU LIKE IT!!!
