                                   Heat Experiment

           Water Rising Experiment

Video

Materials:

  • Food colouring
  • Candle
  • Water
  • Bottle glass
  • Matches
  • Plate

Procedure:

  1. Add food colouring to the water
  2. Mix well until the color is equally colored
  3. Pour sufficient water in the plate
  4. Place the candle on the top of the coloured water
  5. Light it up
  6. Put the glass on top and observe

What is happening?

  1. Heat is produced by the burning candle.
  2. The heat speeds up the molecules meaning the molecules gain kinetic energy.
  3. When the cup is placed over the candle, the flame goes out because it doesn't  have oxygen.
  4. When the flame goes out the air inside loses heat which slowes down the movement of the molecules.

    5. As the molecular get slower they take less space and that
causes lower pressure at the top of the glass.

 6. The high pressure outside and low pressure inside are equalized.  When the water rises causing the same amount of air to take less space which means higher pressure (than before) on the inside.

Conclusion

The air inside the glass has lower pressure than the air outside the glass. This higher atmospheric pressure from the outside pushes the water from the plate up and into the glass.
